Located approximately 4 kilometres north of Sydney’s CBD and was officially named a harbourside suburb on 4th June 2010 by the Geographical Names Board. It shares its postcode with Neutral Bay and spans a large open foreshore area (Kurraba Reserve) has direct access to the harbour, while the upper levels (the Hodgson Lookout and Spains Wharf Lookout) feature spectacular harbour and city views.

Recreation areas include Kurraba Reserve, where dogs are welcome and Hodgson Reserve, which has seats, lights, a bubbler and a custom-designed playground with 'olde worlde' styling.Transport is via a ferry wharf which is located at Kurraba Point for inner harbour ferry services, by bus and by car but parking is very limited along Kurraba Road.

Kurraba Point is on the traditional land of the of the Cammeraygal Group of the Ku-ring-gai Aboriginal Tribe. It was formerly known as Thrupps Point and Ballast Point, when the area operated as a foreshore sandstone quarry in the 1850's and stone from the site was used as ballast for ships returning to England. In 1855 some 8,000 tons of stone were taken from Kurraba Point to complete Fort Denison.

Hungry Bay or Shell Cove, however Kurraba Point was first known as Thrupp's Point, after Lt. Alfred Thrupp.Kurraba Point was named for the point of land on which it is located, between Neutral Bay and Shell Cove and was formerly part of Neutral Bay. Kurraba is originally an Aboriginal name meaning
